Plan a 5-day Rishikesh trip from Indore or Bhopal with river rafting, Ganga Aarti, Mussoorie and Haridwar, plus rafting stretches, costs, best time and tips.
Quick answer: A Rishikesh trip from Indore or Bhopal works best as 5 days: reach Delhi or Haridwar by overnight train, spend two days in Rishikesh for river rafting, cafés and the Ganga Aarti, one day in Mussoorie, and one evening at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. Rafting runs roughly from September to June and pauses in the peak monsoon. A Rishikesh group trip costs from ₹6,499 per person, and the 16 km Shivpuri stretch is the best rafting option for first-timers.
Rishikesh is where a lot of people from Central India take their first real mountain trip. It is close enough to reach in one overnight journey, cheap enough for students, and has something for everyone: white-water rafting for the adventure crowd, yoga and ashrams for the calm ones, cliff-side cafés for the people who just want to sit with a view, and the evening Ganga Aarti that moves even the most cynical traveller.
We run Rishikesh group trips from Indore and Bhopal all year round. This guide covers how to get there, how many days you need, a full itinerary with Mussoorie and Haridwar, rafting details, costs and the small things that make the trip better.
How to reach Rishikesh from Indore and Bhopal
By train: The most popular option. Take an overnight train from Indore, Ujjain or Bhopal to Delhi, Haridwar or Dehradun. From Haridwar, Rishikesh is only about 25 kilometres, roughly 45 minutes by road.
By flight: Fly to Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, which is about 35 kilometres from Rishikesh, usually with one stop from Indore or Bhopal. Flying to Delhi and taking a Volvo or cab (around 6 hours) is another option.
By road: Group trips usually use a tempo traveller from Delhi or Haridwar for the local leg, which keeps everyone together and makes Mussoorie and Haridwar easy to add.
How many days are enough for Rishikesh?
Trip length | What you can cover | Best for |
|---|---|---|
2–3 days | Rishikesh only: rafting, cafés, Ganga Aarti | A quick weekend from Delhi |
4–5 days | Rishikesh + Mussoorie + Haridwar | Most travellers from Indore and Bhopal (recommended) |
6–8 days | Add Chopta–Tungnath trek or Nainital and Jim Corbett | Trekkers and longer holidays |
5-day Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Haridwar itinerary
Day 0: Indore or Bhopal to Delhi or Haridwar
Board the overnight train with your group. The Trip Captain checks everyone in, and the journey is the first chance to get to know your co-travellers. Dinner on the train. Overnight in transit.
Day 1: Arrive in Rishikesh, cafés and Ganga Aarti
Arrive in the morning and drive to Rishikesh. Check into your riverside camp or hotel, have breakfast and rest for a few hours. In the afternoon, walk through the Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula area, browse the small shops selling Rudraksha beads and handmade clothes, and pick a café with a river view. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan, where hundreds of lamps are offered to the river as the sun goes down. Dinner and bonfire at the camp. Overnight in Rishikesh.
Day 2: River rafting and Beatles Ashram
After breakfast, head upstream for river rafting. Most groups do the Shivpuri to Rishikesh stretch, about 16 kilometres with Grade II and III rapids named things like Roller Coaster and Golf Course. You will float, paddle, scream and, if the guide allows, jump into the river at a calm stretch. After lunch, visit the Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia), where the band stayed in 1968, now full of colourful murals. In the evening, enjoy live music at one of the cafés. Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Rishikesh.
Day 3: Rishikesh to Mussoorie
Drive up to Mussoorie, the Queen of the Hills, about 2 to 3 hours away. On the way, stop at Kempty Falls for a quick splash. In Mussoorie, walk the Mall Road, take the cable car to Gun Hill for views of the Himalayan peaks on a clear day, and spend the evening at Landour, the quiet cantonment area above the town, known for its bakeries and colonial cottages. Overnight in Mussoorie.
Day 4: Mussoorie to Haridwar, Har Ki Pauri Aarti
After a slow breakfast with mountain views, drive down to Haridwar. In the evening, join the famous Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, one of the most powerful spiritual experiences in India, with thousands of people and floating diyas on the river. Board your overnight train back home. Dinner in Haridwar or on the train.
Day 5: Back in Indore or Bhopal
Reach home in the morning, tired, happy and already planning the next trip.
River rafting in Rishikesh: which stretch to choose
Stretch | Distance | Rapids | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
Brahmapuri to Rishikesh | About 9 km | Grade I–II | Kids, nervous first-timers |
Shivpuri to Rishikesh | About 16 km | Grade II–III | Most groups (recommended) |
Marine Drive to Rishikesh | About 24–26 km | Grade III | Those who want a longer ride |
Kaudiyala to Rishikesh | About 35 km or more | Grade III–IV | Experienced rafters |
Rafting usually runs from September to June and is suspended during the peak monsoon, roughly July and August, when the river is too strong. Always raft with an operator that provides helmets, life jackets and a certified guide, and listen to the safety briefing.
Other things to do in Rishikesh
Bungee jumping at Mohan Chatti, one of the highest bungee platforms in India, plus giant swing and flying fox.
Cliff jumping during rafting, at calm stretches approved by your guide.
Neer Garh waterfall, a short hike from the Laxman Jhula area.
Yoga or meditation class at one of the ashrams, even if it is just one morning session.
Riverside camping with a bonfire and music.
Café hopping for smoothie bowls, momos and Israeli food with river views.
Where to stay in Rishikesh
Where you stay shapes the whole trip. The Tapovan and Laxman Jhula area is best for cafés, yoga studios and nightlife-free evenings with music, and it is walking distance to most sights. Swarg Ashram and Ram Jhula are quieter and closer to the ashrams and the Parmarth Niketan aarti. For a group, the most fun option is a riverside camp near Shivpuri, about 16 kilometres upstream, with tents on the sand, a bonfire, volleyball and the rafting start point right next to you. Camps are basic but clean on our trips, with attached or shared washrooms depending on the property. If you prefer a proper room and Wi-Fi, choose a hotel in Tapovan for the first night and a camp for the second, so you get both experiences.

Rules and tips for Rishikesh
Rishikesh is a vegetarian, alcohol-free town within its main limits. Respect this, it is part of what makes the town special.
Dress modestly at the ghats and ashrams.
Do not swim in the Ganga outside safe zones. The current is much stronger than it looks.
Book rafting through your group or a licensed operator. Cheap unlicensed rafting is not worth the risk.
Carry a light jacket for evenings, even in spring, and a warm one for Mussoorie in winter.
Keep your phone in a dry bag while rafting, or leave it behind.
Is Rishikesh good for a first strangers trip?
Rishikesh is one of the best first strangers trips in India. The town is safe, compact and welcoming to solo travellers, and rafting is the perfect ice-breaker, because nothing bonds a group faster than getting splashed by the same rapid. It is also a favourite first trip for women travelling alone. Read our guides to strangers trips in India and solo trips for girls for more.
