A 7-day Rajasthan group trip itinerary covering Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, Ranakpur, Jodhpur and a Jaisalmer desert camp, with costs, best time and tips for travellers from Indore and Bhopal.
Quick answer: The best Rajasthan group trip itinerary for first-timers is a 6 to 7-day loop of Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh–Ranakpur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, with one night in a desert camp at the Sam dunes. October to March is the best time to go. From Indore, Udaipur is the easiest entry point by road (about 8 to 9 hours), and a Rajasthan group trip costs from about ₹9,000 to ₹11,500 per person for the circuit.
Rajasthan is the one state every Indian traveller has on their list, and for good reason. In a single week you can wake up next to a lake, walk through a 15th-century fort, eat dal baati in a blue-painted lane and fall asleep under desert stars. The problem is that most people try to cover it all, and spend half the trip in a car.
This guide is the route we use for our Rajasthan group trips from Central India. It is built for groups of friends and strangers aged 18 to 38, and it balances big sights with enough free time to actually enjoy each city.
Why Rajasthan is perfect for a group trip
Rajasthan works brilliantly for groups. The cities are close enough to do by road, the food is made for sharing, and the big experiences, like a desert camp night or a sunset at a lake, are more fun with a crowd. It is also one of the easiest states to reach from Indore, Bhopal and Ujjain, which keeps travel costs low.

7-day Rajasthan group trip itinerary
Day 0: Indore to Udaipur
Most groups from Indore and Bhopal leave in the evening by sleeper bus or tempo traveller and reach Udaipur early next morning. It saves a hotel night and a full travel day. Meet your Trip Captain and the group at the pickup point and get some sleep on the way.
Day 1: Udaipur, the City of Lakes
Check in, freshen up and start with breakfast at a lakeside café. Visit the City Palace, the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, then walk through the old city lanes to Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat. In the evening, take a boat ride on Lake Pichola as the sun sets behind the Aravallis and the palaces light up. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant. Overnight in Udaipur.
Day 2: Udaipur at your own pace
A slower day. Visit Saheliyon ki Bari, Fateh Sagar Lake and the Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) viewpoint for sunset. In the evening, catch the Dharohar folk dance show at Bagore ki Haveli. Shopping for block-print fabric, silver and leather juttis is best in the Hathi Pol and Bada Bazaar area. Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Udaipur.
Day 3: Udaipur to Jodhpur via Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur
A long but beautiful road day through the Aravalli hills. First stop is Kumbhalgarh Fort, whose wall runs for about 36 kilometres and is often called the Great Wall of India. Then visit the Ranakpur Jain Temple, famous for its 1,444 carved marble pillars, no two alike. Reach Jodhpur in the evening. Overnight in Jodhpur. Read our Kumbhalgarh Fort guide and Ranakpur Jain Temple guide before you go.
Day 4: Jodhpur, the Blue City
Start early at Mehrangarh Fort, which towers about 125 metres above the city and has one of the best museums in Rajasthan. Walk down through the blue houses of the old city, visit Jaswant Thada and the Clock Tower market, and try a mirchi vada and makhaniya lassi. Overnight in Jodhpur. Our blog on Jodhpur, the blue city has more.
Day 5: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, desert camp night
Drive west into the Thar desert to Jaisalmer, around 5 to 6 hours. After lunch, head out to the Sam sand dunes for a camel or jeep safari at sunset. The evening is the highlight of the trip: Rajasthani folk music and Kalbeliya dance, a bonfire, dinner under the stars and a night in a desert camp. Overnight in the camp.
Day 6: Jaisalmer, the Golden City
Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few living forts in the world, with families, shops and guesthouses still inside its walls. Visit the fort, Patwon ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake. In the afternoon, take a short drive to Kuldhara, the abandoned village with its many legends. Overnight in Jaisalmer.
Day 7: Jaisalmer to Indore
Begin the journey home by overnight train or road, reaching Indore the next morning. Swap photos, plan the next trip, and say goodbye to the group.

Where to stay on a Rajasthan group trip
The right stay changes the whole experience in Rajasthan. In Udaipur, stay in the old city near Lake Pichola or Gangaur Ghat so you can walk to the City Palace and the lakeside cafés. In Jodhpur, a haveli in the old blue city puts Mehrangarh Fort right above you, and many have rooftop restaurants with fort views. In Jaisalmer, split your stay: one night in a desert camp at Sam for the safari and bonfire, and one night in town near the fort.
For groups, a good desert camp should have clean attached washrooms, enough blankets for cold nights and a proper dinner setup. On our trips, the Trip Captain checks every stay before the group arrives, and girls share tents and rooms only with girls. If you are planning on your own, book camps that list exactly what is included, because cultural shows, dinner and the camel ride are sometimes charged separately.
What to eat on a Rajasthan trip
Rajasthani food is rich, spicy and made for sharing. In Udaipur, try dal baati churma and a Mewari thali. In Jodhpur, do not leave without a mirchi vada, pyaaz kachori and a thick makhaniya lassi. In Jaisalmer, ker sangri and bajre ki roti are local desert staples. Most of Rajasthan is very vegetarian-friendly, and laal maas is the famous non-vegetarian dish if you want to try it.
Rajasthan group trip tips
Do not try to add Jaipur to a 7-day loop. It is far from Jaisalmer. Do Jaipur and Pushkar as a separate trip.
Pack for two seasons. Winter days are warm, but desert nights can drop to 5°C or lower.
Start fort visits early. Mehrangarh and Jaisalmer Fort get crowded and hot by noon.
Carry cash for small shops, camel rides and tips at the desert camp.
Bargain politely in markets, but not with small vendors selling chai or snacks.
Respect temple rules. Ranakpur has a dress code and leather items are not allowed inside.
Is a Rajasthan trip safe for girls and first-timers?
Yes. Rajasthan is one of the most visited states in India and well set up for travellers. Udaipur in particular is a favourite for women travelling for the first time. On TravelTech group trips, girls share rooms only with girls, the Trip Captain stays with the group at the desert camp, and smoking and alcohol are not allowed during travel. Read our guides to solo trips for girls and strangers trips if you are joining alone.
