Plan a Kerala trip from Indore or Bhopal: how to reach, a 6-day Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey–Varkala itinerary, best time to visit, real costs and first-timer tips.
Quick answer: The best Kerala trip from Indore is a 6-day loop: fly to Kochi, spend two nights in Munnar's tea hills, one night in Thekkady, one night on an Alleppey houseboat and one night on the cliffs of Varkala, then fly home from Trivandrum. October to February is the best time to go. A Kerala group trip costs from about ₹14,000 to ₹23,500 per person plus flights, and most travellers from Indore and Bhopal fly into Kochi with one stop.
Kerala is one of those places that looks exactly like the photos. Rolling tea estates in Munnar, palm-lined backwaters in Alleppey, spice gardens in Thekkady and red cliffs dropping into the sea at Varkala. For travellers from Indore, Bhopal and the rest of Central India, it is also one of the most complete holidays you can take in a single week: hills, forests, water and beaches without changing states.
We run Kerala group trips for travellers from Central India throughout the season. This guide covers how to get there, how many days you need, a day-wise itinerary, the real cost, and the mistakes first-timers make.
How to reach Kerala from Indore and Bhopal
By flight: This is the fastest option. Flights from Indore and Bhopal to Kochi (COK) usually have one stop, often via Mumbai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad, and take 4 to 7 hours in total. Fly into Kochi and out of Trivandrum (TRV) so you do not have to drive back north at the end. This is called an open-jaw ticket and it saves almost a full day.
By train: A few long-distance trains connect Madhya Pradesh to Kerala, but the journey takes more than a day and a half each way. It works if you have a long holiday and enjoy train journeys, but most working travellers fly.
Within Kerala: Distances look short on the map, but hill roads are slow. Kochi to Munnar takes around 4 hours, Munnar to Thekkady around 3 to 4 hours, and Thekkady to Alleppey around 4 hours. A group vehicle with a driver who knows these roads makes a big difference.
How many days are enough for a Kerala trip?
Trip length | What you can cover | Best for |
|---|---|---|
4 days | Munnar + Alleppey | Short leave, a quick taste of Kerala |
6 days | Munnar + Thekkady + Alleppey + Varkala | Most travellers (recommended) |
7–9 days | Add Kochi, Kovalam or Kanyakumari | Relaxed pace, families |
Six days is the sweet spot. It gives you the hills, the backwaters and a beach without spending every day in the car.
6-day Kerala itinerary from Indore
Day 1: Arrive in Kochi, drive to Munnar
Land in Kochi in the morning and meet your group and Trip Captain at the airport. The drive to Munnar climbs slowly through rubber plantations and spice country, with stops at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls on the way. As you gain height, the air cools and the first tea estates appear on the slopes. Check in, freshen up and enjoy a relaxed dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Munnar.
Day 2: Munnar sightseeing
Start early, because Munnar's mornings are the most beautiful time of day, with mist sitting in the valleys. After breakfast, visit Eravikulam National Park (check if it is open, as it closes for a few months during the Nilgiri tahr calving season), the Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point. Walk through a tea estate in the afternoon and pick up fresh tea and spices to take home. Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Munnar.
Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady
After breakfast, drive through cardamom hills to Thekkady, the gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve. In the afternoon, take a guided spice plantation tour and see how pepper, cardamom and cinnamon are grown. In the evening, you can watch a Kalaripayattu martial arts show or a Kathakali performance. Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Thekkady.
Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey houseboat
Morning boat ride or nature walk at Periyar, then drive down to Alleppey. Board your houseboat around noon and spend the afternoon floating through the backwaters, past paddy fields, small villages and coconut groves. Lunch, evening tea and dinner are cooked on board, usually fresh Kerala fish curry, appam and rice. This is the night everyone remembers. Overnight on the houseboat.
Day 5: Alleppey to Varkala
After breakfast on the houseboat, check out and drive south to Varkala. The cliff top here is lined with cafés, small shops and guesthouses overlooking the Arabian Sea. Spend the afternoon on the beach, then watch the sunset from the North Cliff. Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Varkala.
Day 6: Varkala to Trivandrum, fly home
A slow morning by the sea, then a one-hour drive to Trivandrum airport for your flight back to Indore or Bhopal. If your flight is late, visit the Padmanabhaswamy Temple area in Trivandrum on the way.
Best time to visit Kerala
Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
Post-monsoon | September–November | Very green, full waterfalls, pleasant weather, fewer crowds |
Winter (peak) | December–February | Best weather overall, busiest, higher houseboat prices |
Summer | March–May | Hot and humid on the coast, better for Munnar |
Monsoon | June–August | Heavy rain, lush landscapes, lowest prices, Ayurveda season |
October to February is the most reliable window for a first trip. If you want New Year in Kerala, our Kerala NY and Xmas edition runs over the holidays.
How much does a Kerala trip from Indore cost?
A 6-day Kerala group trip from Indore costs about ₹14,000 to ₹23,500 per person for the land package, plus ₹8,000 to ₹16,000 for return flights depending on how early you book. Here are our current Kerala departures.
Trip | Duration | Starting price per person |
|---|---|---|
Group trip | ₹13,999 | |
4N / 5D | ₹16,500 | |
5N / 6D | ₹16,999 | |
6N / 7D | ₹23,499 |
Prices are starting fares on travelltech.com and vary by batch and room sharing.
Money-saving tips: book flights at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead, choose an open-jaw ticket (Kochi in, Trivandrum out), avoid the Christmas–New Year week if you are on a budget, and share a houseboat with your group instead of booking a private one.
What to eat in Kerala
Food is half the reason to visit. Try appam with vegetable or chicken stew for breakfast, a traditional sadya served on a banana leaf, Kerala parotta with beef or veg kurma, karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish cooked in banana leaf) in Alleppey, and banana chips and halwa to take home. Vegetarians will find plenty of options everywhere, especially in Munnar and Thekkady.
Best things to do in Kerala on a group trip
Sunrise at Kolukkumalai or Top Station near Munnar, when clouds fill the valleys below you.
Kayaking in the narrow canals of Alleppey, where houseboats cannot go.
A bamboo rafting or border hiking trip inside Periyar Tiger Reserve, run by the forest department.
Ayurvedic massage after long travel days, best done at a certified centre.
Chinese fishing nets and Jew Town in Fort Kochi if your flight lands early.
Cliff-top café hopping and a sunset swim at Varkala.
Most of these activities are optional and paid on the spot, so keep ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 aside if you want to try a few.
Common mistakes on a first Kerala trip
Trying to cover too much. Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, Kovalam and Kanyakumari in five days means living in the car.
Flying in and out of the same city. It adds a long backtrack drive on the last day.
Skipping the houseboat night. A day cruise is nice, but the overnight stay is the real experience.
Not carrying a light jacket. Munnar can be cold in the early morning, even when the coast is hot.
Forgetting mosquito repellent for the backwaters and Thekkady.
Is Kerala good for a group trip or a solo trip?
Kerala is one of the easiest states in India for both. It has organised tourism, friendly locals and good connectivity, which is why it regularly appears on lists of safe places for women travellers. A group trip makes it cheaper, because the houseboat and the vehicle are the two biggest costs and both are shared. If you are joining alone, read our guide to strangers trips in India and solo trips for girls.
