Plan a Pachmarhi trip from Bhopal or Indore: how to reach, a 3-day itinerary, the best places to visit, real costs, best time and local tips for the Queen of Satpura.

Quick answer: A Pachmarhi trip plan from Bhopal or Indore works best as 2 nights and 3 days, or a tight 1 night and 2 days from Bhopal. Pachmarhi is about 200 km from Bhopal (around 5 hours) and roughly 400+ km from Indore. Must-see places are Bee Falls, Jata Shankar, Pandav Caves, Handi Khoh, Priyadarshini Point, Reechgarh and the Dhoopgarh sunset, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. October to June is the best time to go, and July to September for monsoon greenery. Group trips start from ₹5,499 per person.

Ask anyone in Madhya Pradesh where they went for their first hill-station trip, and there is a good chance they will say Pachmarhi. The Queen of Satpura sits at around 1,000 metres in the Satpura range, surrounded by forests, waterfalls, caves and sandstone cliffs. It is close enough for a weekend, cheap enough for students and beautiful enough that people keep coming back.

We run Pachmarhi group trips from Bhopal and Indore almost every weekend, and our travellers have written about them in Pachmarhi group trip with strangers and a solo traveller's Pachmarhi story. This guide is the practical side: how to reach, what to see, a day-wise plan, the real cost and local tips.

3-day Pachmarhi itinerary

Day 1: Arrive, Pandav Caves and Dhoopgarh sunset

Leave Bhopal early and reach Pachmarhi by late morning. Check in, have lunch and start with the Pandav Caves, five rock-cut caves on a small hill that local legend connects to the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. Then visit the Christ Church, built in the 1870s, a quiet colonial church with stained-glass windows. Finish the day at Dhoopgarh, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh at around 1,350 metres, for a sunset over endless layers of Satpura hills. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Pachmarhi.

Day 2: Waterfalls, caves and viewpoints

Start with Bee Falls, the most popular waterfall in Pachmarhi, where you can stand under the cold water in most seasons. Next, Jata Shankar, a cave temple of Lord Shiva in a narrow gorge, where the rock formations look like matted hair. After lunch, visit Handi Khoh, a deep ravine with sheer cliffs and forest below, and Priyadarshini Point, from where the British officer Captain Forsyth first saw Pachmarhi in the 1850s. End at Reechgarh, a cave and rock formation shaped a bit like a bear's den, and Apsara Vihar, a small pool and waterfall that is perfect for families. Overnight in Pachmarhi.

Day 3: Jeep safari or Duchess Falls, then home

For wildlife lovers, take an early morning jeep safari in the Satpura forests, where you can see gaur (Indian bison), sambar, langurs, giant squirrels and many birds. If you prefer a trek, Duchess Falls is a steeper walk down to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area. Check out after lunch and drive back to Bhopal by evening.

Where to stay in Pachmarhi

Most hotels are around the main market and bus stand area, which makes it easy to walk to food and shops in the evening. MP Tourism runs several well-located properties in Pachmarhi that are popular with families. Budget hotels and homestays are available for groups, but book early for long weekends, Diwali, Christmas, summer holidays and Mahashivratri, when the town fills up.

Food in Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi is not a foodie town, but you will eat well. Try poha and jalebi in the morning, simple dal-baati or thali meals at local dhabas, corn on the cob near the viewpoints, and hot pakoras in the monsoon. Most food is vegetarian, with a few restaurants serving non-vegetarian dishes in the market area.

What to pack for Pachmarhi

  • Comfortable shoes or sports sandals with grip for wet rocks and steps.

  • A light jacket from March to June, and a warm jacket from November to February.

  • A quick-dry change of clothes if you plan to get into Bee Falls or Apsara Vihar.

  • A rain jacket or umbrella in the monsoon.

  • Sunscreen, a cap and a reusable water bottle.

  • Basic medicines and mosquito repellent for the forest points.

Planning around Mahashivratri? Pachmarhi hosts a big Mahashivratri mela every year, when thousands of devotees climb to Chauragarh temple carrying tridents. It is an incredible cultural experience, but stays get booked out and roads get crowded, so plan early or avoid those dates if you want a quiet trip.

Pachmarhi travel tips

  1. Use registered gypsies. Many points are inside the forest area, and only registered vehicles are allowed on some routes.

  2. Wear shoes with grip. Bee Falls, Jata Shankar and Duchess Falls involve wet rocks and steps.

  3. Plan Dhoopgarh for sunset and reach 30 to 45 minutes early on weekends.

  4. Do not feed monkeys at the viewpoints and keep bags closed.

  5. Avoid swimming in the monsoon when water levels rise quickly.

  6. Carry cash. UPI works in most places, but network can drop at some points.
